Ich podstawowe cechy to:

- półotwarte kolumny "c", "e"

- niesymetryczny, ale zwarty układ pionków

- obie strony wykonują najczęściej roszady krótki, jednk nie jest to regułą.

Możliwości gry, jak to w szachach, są przeogromne. Popatrzmy na niektóre przypadki.

Tytuł i przyjęta nazwa związane są oczywiście z postacią dr. Siegberta Tarrascha, a konkretnie z wariantem obrony francuskiej nazwanym imieniem tego wybitnego szachisty niemieckiego, urodzonego we Wrocławiu. jego partia z Blackburnem, grana na turnieju w Hastigngs w Anglii w 1985 roku, niech posłuży jako wprowadzenie.

Pierwszy z zeszytów naszego cyklu poświęconego typowym strukturom pionkowym, poświęcony był pozycjom z tak zwanym izolowanym pionkiem hetmańskim. Już wtedy w niektórych prezentowanych partiach zaobserwowaliśmy swojego rodzaju transformację. Na skutek wymian izolowany pionek "d" zyskiwał przy boku towarzysza, który początkowo go podpierał, a później kroczył u jego boku, jak to obrazuje ilustracja. Taką parę zwykło się określać jako "wiszące  pionki".

The King’s Indian Defense has a reputation as a sharp combative opening where Black aims to attack on the kingside, usually through a pawn storm supported by heavier artillery.
